HOME AngelyneExecutive Producer and star Emmy Rossum dons the blond wig and hot pink for new limited series, Angelyne. Angelyne’s larger-than-life persona covered billboards around the city of angels and catapulted her to cult status in the ’80s. Rossum gathered hundreds of hours of footage and images of Angelyne to study her mannerisms and voice to tell the story. As a lover of etymology, she bore her depiction of one of Los Angeles’ most mysterious icons from the name. “I had a way of breaking down her name for myself that I never actually told anybody that’s like a secret prayer I would tell myself before we rolled. When I broke down her name I got, ‘At a fork in the road, I’m reborn a messenger of God,’” she said. “I truly believe that the character of Angelyne represents something that people needed in Los Angeles which was a a bright pink light. Nick SabanAlabama coach Nick Saban set the college football world abuzz Wednesday night when he told a gathering of business leaders in the state that Texas A&M assembled the top-ranked recruiting class in the country because it “bought every player” with name, image and likeness deals. Decrying the influence of money in recruiting, Saban said NIL was being used unfairly. At Alabama, he said of its No. 2-ranked class, “We didn’t buy one player, all right?” Then Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher quickly assembled a news conference on Thursday morning in order to respond, and gasoline was poured on the fire. Fisher didn’t hold back, calling Saban a “narcissist” and saying of him, “Some people think they’re God.” Saban’s offensive coordinator at LSU from 2000 to 2004, Fisher practically laughed off his former boss’ assertion that there has always been parity in college football and NIL threatens to undermine that. “He’s the greatest ever, huh?” Fisher said. “When you’ve got all the advantages, it’s easy.” Read more & Have a good time... John DalyIt’s early, but John Daly is currently at the top of the leaderboard for the 2022 PGA Championship. Daly kicked off things with a birdie on the very first hole. After settling for par on each of the next three holes, he took advantage of the par-5 sixth. While there’s still so much golf left to be played, seeing Daly’s name at the top of the leaderboard has fans feeling some type of way this Thursday morning. Waking up to see John Daly at the top of the leaderboard is just incredible,” one fan wrote. John Daly is your leader at the 2022 PGA Championship,” another fan wrote. “Just stop the tournament now!” Daly isn’t the only competitor who is at two-under par early in this major. Y.E. Yang and Robert MacIntyre both own a share of the lead. It would be incredible to see Daly leading the pack after Thursday. That being said, he’ll have to fend off big names like Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. Read more & Have a good time... Harry StylesHarry Styles has been constantly on the go since his teenage years in the boy band One Direction – one world tour after another. So the idea of home is something he’s been giving a lot of thought. Just consider the title of his new album, out today: Harry’s House. Morning Edition’s Leila Fadel spoke to Styles about the concept of home and where he sought it during and after lockdown, helping friends heal and the process of separating the pop star from the person, especially when they’ve been the former for so much of their life. And she learned, while researching him for the interview, he was researching about her too. “Leila gave the best commencement address in Northeastern history,” he says. Harry Styles: I think for me home is just about friends. While this is such a personal album, and so much about my own journey finding a place of home, I also feel like it’s very much dedicated to my friends. Read more & Have a good time... RihannaMulti-hyphenate pop star Rihanna and rapper A$AP Rocky have welcomed their first child, according to a TMZ report. The baby boy was reportedly born on 13 May in Los Angeles. No name was given. The couple, together since early 2020, first announced their pregnancy with a heavily photographed stroll through A$AP Rocky’s home town of New York in January. The fashion mogul and Fenty beauty founder has since made headlines for her trend-setting maternity style of sheer lace, crop tops and belly-baring outfits. When I found out I was pregnant, I thought to myself, There’s no way I’m going to go shopping in no maternity aisle,” the 34-year-old singer told Vogue in April. “I’m sorry – it’s too much fun to get dressed up. I’m not going to let that part disappear because my body is changing. I’m hoping that we were able to redefine what’s considered ‘decent’ for pregnant women,” she elaborated. “My body is doing incredible things right now, and I’m not going to be ashamed of that. This time should feel celebratory. Because why should you be hiding your pregnancy?” Read more & Have a good time... PGA ChampionshipRory McIlroy won’t have to worry about back-dooring a top-5 finish at a major championship after he grabbed the first-round lead at the 104th PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club on Friday. With nine one-putts in his first 12 holes and 10 drives longer than 320 yards, McIlroy posted a 5-under 65 to grab the lead after the first 18 holes. It was the fourth time in his career that he shot 65 or better in the opening round of a major, the most by any player in the Masters era (since 1934), according to data from ESPN Stats & Information. “I’ve been playing well coming in here,” McIlroy said. “I’ve been carrying some good form. Obviously, I took a lot from that last round at Augusta, played well up in D.C. at the Wells Fargo, and played good in the practice rounds earlier this week.” Read more & Have a good time... Madison CawthornRep. Madison Cawthorn, a freshman Republican who’s been beset by scandal since taking office last year, has been ousted in a heated primary in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District, according to a race call from The Associated Press. Cawthorn lost to state Sen. Chuck Edwards, who had received the backing of some Republicans who had tired of Cawthorn’s controversies. As of the AP race call, Edwards had received more than 33% of the vote, to Cawthorn’s nearly 32% of the vote. In North Carolina, a winner just needs to cross a 30% threshold in order to avoid a July runoff election. The result is a stunning defeat for Cawthorn, who is a fervent supporter of former President Donald Trump — and who had Trump’s endorsement. A member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who was first elected in 2020 to former Rep. Mark Meadows’ seat, Cawthorn faced a crowded field of primary challengers in a district that will likely remain red. Read more & Have a good time... NBA Draft LotteryJamahl Mosley was feeling lucky. Heading into Tuesday night’s NBA draft lottery, the Orlando Magic were going to be represented by president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman on stage. But early Tuesday morning, a switch was made because of a feeling Mosley had. So when the lottery took place Tuesday night at Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center, it was Mosley who took the stage instead to represent the franchise. Turns out, the audible worked as the Magic won the lottery for the fourth time in franchise history and will pick first in June’s 2022 NBA draft. “I haven’t been very good at this,” Weltman told reporters via videoconference. “It’s funny. Coach was feeling lucky and we let him roll the dice and tonight, he’s the coach of the year.” Orlando had a 14% chance to get the top pick, along with the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons. Pennsylvania primaryJohn Fetterman, Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor, easily won the state’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, according to a race call by The Associated Press, but the Republican race appeared headed for a recount. The 6-foot-9 Fetterman, who often wears shorts to campaign events and has the persona of an authentic anti-politician, topped Rep. Conor Lamb in the primary. Fetterman’s win was expected despite the fact that he suffered a stroke last weekend and was not able to attend the last swing of campaign events. On Tuesday his campaign announced he was about to undergo a procedure to implant a pacemaker. Fetterman has said he’ll be fine. Lamb, a more moderate candidate, failed to make any significant traction against Fetterman, a former small-town mayor who backed Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential run, even though Lamb was seen as a rising Democratic star in the Trump era. State Sen. Malcolm Kenyatta, who was looking to become the first ever LGBTQ candidate elected to statewide office in Pennsylvania, trailed even further behind. Read more & Have a good time... The model and dietician is one of four SI Swimsuit 2022 cover stars, along with reality star Kim Kardashian, singer Ciara and musician and fashion entrepreneur Yumi Nu. Musk is the mother of Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, restaurateur Kimbal Musk and filmmaker Tosca Musk. “If I thought I could be a swimsuit model for Sports Illustrated, people would have locked me away as a crazy lady,” said Musk with laughter in a video released by the magazine. “And now, here I am.” “I’m very excited to let people know that women in their 70s are gorgeous,” she added. MJ Day, editor-in-chief of SI Swimsuit, championed the latest women chosen to feature on the cover. “The journey we’ve been on — to break out of the mold the world put us in — may sound familiar. It’s certainly familiar to the women we’ve chosen to be our cover models: Maye, Ciara, Yumi, Kim,” said Day in a press release Monday. Read more & Have a good time... ArsenalIf last week’s Premier League defeat against Tottenham Hotpsur was damaging, over the course of 90 minutes against Newcastle on Monday, Arsenal’s Champions League hopes were all but extinguished. What really hurts for Arsenal’s fans is that before those two games, the club had been shaping up to announce its return to the top of European football. The 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park — a performance midfielder Granit Xhaka described as a “disaster” — delivered a huge blow to Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the Premier League top four as the Gunners remain two points behind Tottenham with one game left to play. To regain fourth position and qualify for the Champions League, Arsenal will realistically need to beat Everton on Sunday and hope bottom side Norwich — without a win in six Premier League games — can pull off an unlikely victory against Tottenham. But as things stand, Monday’s lackluster defeat appears costly. Read more & Have a good time...
